A BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent lines between your brows that develop over time. These "expression lines", often called frown lines or crow's feet, are due to the contraction of a muscle under the skin in that area. BOTOX Cosmetic® can eliminate that "always angry" look or that "tired" appearance caused by dynamic wrinkles.

One 10-minute treatment -- a few tiny injections -- relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up to 4 onths. The results are dramatic and apparent within days. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, BOTOX Cosmetic® virtually "erases" these lines.

What is Cosmetic BOTOX®?

Cosmetic BOTOX® is a treatment for the wrinkles caused by repetitive movements.  The most usually treated regions are:

  • The wrinkles located around the eyes, called crow’s feet, caused by repeated frowning or smiling;
  • The horizontal wrinkles located on the forehead, caused by the raising of the eyebrows;
  • The wrinkles and folded skin located between the eyebrows, and attributed to the frowning of the eyebrows.

Is this safe?

YES!  BOTOX® has been available for 20 years and has been used to treat many diseases.  Indeed, it is used on children as early as the age of 2, to treat cerebral paralysis.  These children receive more than 10 times the dose required for aesthetic treatments... EVERY 3 MONTHS!

If the product pose NO danger for a 2 year-old child (who may be injected much larger doses of BOTOX®), it is therefore NOT dangerous for you.  The innocuity of BOTOX® was demonstrated several times during the last twenty years by extensive analysis and research.  To put this back into perspective, risks and side effects associated with BOTOX® are very similar to those caused by Tylenol. Cosmetic BOTOX® is a medicine approved and authorized by Canada’s Health Protection Branch.

Is Cosmetic BOTOX™ a toxin/a poison?

Can it cause food intoxication? Is it botulism?
NO, it is neither toxic for you, nor it is a poison!  Cosmetic BOTOX® is not botulism and it does not cause any food intoxication.  In fact, botulism is the name of a disease but not an active medicine.  The product is a purified protein, extracted from natural bacteria, and processed according to harsh pharmaceutical manufacturing norms.  Penicillin is extracted from mould in a similar way!  BOTOX® is an approved medicine, used in VERY small doses.

How can make sure that this will not be toxic for me?

In general, for aesthetic cares, you will receive less than 100 units.  In order for one to feel slightly sick, it would be necessary to inject more than 35 times this does at once, which will NEVER be the case (besides, that would cost you more than 42 000 $ – completely impossible!)
You have more chances to be "poisoned" with Tylenol (if you swallow the whole content of a bottle in one shot!) than to have any after-effects after receiving Cosmetic BOTOX®. The doses are VERY SMALL and have been proven safe in a manner therapeutic.

How does it work?

Cosmetic BOTOX® relaxes the muscles located under the skin of the treated area, in order to give it a smooth and young appearance back.

How long does the treatment last?

Usually, after consultation, treatment lasts only 10 minutes. As there is no period of inactivity, you can receive the injections during your lunch hour, and only you will know that you had a treatment!

How soon can one see the effects?

It can take UP TO 14 days to reach the maximum effect. Usually, we ask our patients to wait for this period of 14 days before evaluating the final result.

How does a treatment happen?

The product is injected using a very tiny needle – a lot smaller than those used for blood samples, etc.  This type of needle is very similar to the one used for insulin injections.

Is this painful?

Most of patients report that injections feel like a pinch, although this will differ for everybody.  Most of the time, our patients’ reaction is: "It’s already finished?"

How long do the effects of Cosmetic BOTOX® last?  Are they permanent?

NO – the effects of Cosmetic BOTOX® are not permanent. They will last for about 3 or 4 months, depending on the patient.

If you follow some doctors’ recommendations, stating that the first 3 treatments should be received consecutively every 3 months (i.e. no slack time between each treatment), the effects of subsequent treatments should last longer than 3 months.

Will my face look worse when the effects disappear?

On the contrary!  If you stop using Cosmetic BOTOX®, the aspect of your face will not deteriorate, even when the effects disappear. Cosmetic BOTOX® "stops and slows down" the clock of ageing. When you stop the treatments, the clock of ageing comes back to normal.
Worst comes to worst, you will simply realize that your face gets back to the same appearance as when you started the treatment.  If you use Cosmetic BOTOX® during a certain number of years, and then stop the treatments, your muscles will have learnt to remain relaxed and eventually, your appearance will still be slightly improved in comparison with the one you had at the beginning of the treatments.

I do not want to look as if I was wearing an expressionless mask – can that happen?

Certainly NOT. In general, you will have the appearance that you desire – as natural as you wish. Most people simply want to have a YOUNG, NATURAL AND RELAXED look, without looking "redone". Thanks to the experienced hands of the injectors, patients usually report that nobody around them noticed anything. Their friends simply tell them that they look fit and well rested!

Which are the after-effects?

After-effects are RARE, and they are NOT PERMANENT.
Occasionally, there could be light ecchymosis (that can easily be concealed by make-up), or light headaches of short duration. They could sometimes also translate into a falling eyelid.
Incidence of these after-effects is of less than 2% and they only last from few days to few weeks. A majority of patients suffer no after-effect.
Counter indications apply to people who suffer from harsh myasthenia or are affected by Eaton Lambert syndrome (2 diseases that affecting acetyl choline).

Where does the product go in my body?

Cosmetic BOTOX® remains locally in the muscle where it was injected.
After injection, Cosmetic BOTOX® is simply metabolized and decomposed within some hours into natural byproducts.

I am pregnant/ breastfeeding my baby. Can I receive injections of Cosmetic BOTOX®?

NO.  It is recommended to wait until stopping breastfeeding before receiving injections of Cosmetic BOTOX®. Although there is no clinical proof showing evidence of danger for the mother or the baby – we prefer not to take any risk.

How much does it cost?

The cost of a treatment of Cosmetic BOTOX® is billed per unit.  A unit of Cosmetic BOTOX® is simply a small quantity of medicine.  The cost of the treatments varies depending on the patient.  The exact number of units that you will need (in order to obtain the appearance that you desire) will be determined at the time of the private consultation with the doctor.  FOR EXAMPLE, treatment of the wrinkles caused by the frowning of eyebrows for a normal woman is about $500.
